Celebration of World Wetland Day 2022 by IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre on 02.02.2021

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre at Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad celebrated the World Wetland Day 2022 on 02nd February 2022 by organizing a Webinar on the topic “Valuation of Ecosystem Services of Wetlands, Kidneys of a landscape” followed by conducting an online Quiz Competition. The theme for this year's World Wetland Day is "Wetlands Action for People and Nature".

 

At the onset of the event, Prof. Sheeja Jagadevan, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering & Co-coordinator, IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre welcomed our Chief Guest Prof. Rajiv Shekhar, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Guest of Honour Prof. Shalivahan, Dy Director and Dean (R&D), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, faculty Members and students of Department of ESE. Prof. Jagadevan also welcomed all other dignitaries and participants with her welcome address. Prof. Jagadevan talked about importance of wetlands and highlighted the importance of wetland day. Prof. Jagadevan also introduced the keynote speaker.

 

Prof. Anshumali, Head of the Department, Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and Coordinator, IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre welcomed all the dignitaries and participants and briefed about the Department of ESE and IIT(ISM) ENVIS. He highlighted the role of freshwater especially wetlands in the interlinking of landscapes with ocean.

 

Guest of Honour Prof. Shalivahan, Dy Director and Dean (R&D), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, talked about the Ramsar Convention and wetlands in his inaugural address.

 

Dr. T.V. Ramachandra, Co-coordinator, Energy & Wetland Research, Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) & Convener of ENVIS Centre at IISc Bangalore was the invited Keynote Speaker for today's webinar. He delivered a talk on “Valuation of Ecosystem Services of Wetlands, Kidneys of a landscape”. The invited lecture was based on some key findings on ecosystem structure and function especially wetlands of southern peninsula. He explicitly said that the vegetation cover in the forest areas and Trees outside Forests (TOFs) play disproportionately significant role in the restoration and conservation of wetlands along with ecosystem services associated with them. The participants deeply involved during the lecture and imbibed fundamental aspects of wetland conservation in terms of livelihood practices, mitigating climate change impact and food & water security in the 21st century.

 

At the end of the event, Prof. Sheeja Jagadevan, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering & Co-coordinator, IIT(ISM) ENVIS Centre proposed the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries, invited Keynote Speaker, Guests, Participants, ESE Faculty Members, Media & Branding Cell, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, Press and Media for their enthusiastic participation. Prof. Jagadevan also expressed her special thanks to Prof. Abhishek, Dean, Information System, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad for providing a virtual platform to organise the event successfully.
