3 Days Executive Development Programme on “Ecosystem Restoration, Ecosystem Goods & Services, Application of RS & GIS and Modelling”

Prof. S. R. Samadder and Prof. S. K. Maiti from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering have recently conducted an Executive Development Programme on “Ecosystem Restoration, Ecosystem Goods & Services, Application of RS & GIS and Modelling” from 20th July 2022 to 22nd July 2022. The training programme was conducted at IIT (ISM) Kolkata Extension Centre.

 

Total 14 executives from four subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd. i.e., CMPDI, BCCL, CIL, and MCL took part in the EDP. The EDP touched upon the pressing issues of the modern environmental problems related to coal mining activities. The training programme began with the introductory lectures of Mr. Abhijit Sinha (GM Enviro, CMPDI) and then for next 3-days various industry experts viz. Mr. V. K. Pandey (Chief GM, Enviro, CMPDI) and Mr. C. Jayadev (GM Enviro, CIL) visited the training facility and interacted with the participants.

 

The major themes that were covered in the training programme were Modern Environmental Management in Coal Sector, Modern concepts of Ecorestoration, Carbon Footprint of Coal Mining, Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS for Monitoring Reclamation Work in Coal Mining Areas, Assessment of Carbon sequestration, NPV calculation for the restored ecosystem, Techniques for Reducing Surface and Groundwater due to Coal Mining and various case studies of successful ecorestoration in challenging scenarios. etc. The participants brought an immense practical experience with themselves which resulted in a highly productive and interactive training programme. The programme ended with a positive note on the future of the Coal mining scenario in India and the participants took a pledge to change the present condition to a more pro-environmental mining in the future.
