World Earth Day 2024 Celebrated by IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP)

Date | April 22, 2024:

Celebration of World Earth Day 2024 under Mission LiFE
Organized by IIT(ISM) EIACP (PC-RP).

EIACP (PC-RP) at Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad Celebrated World Earth Day 2024 under Mission LiFE, focusing on this year's theme Planet vs Plastics and on this momentous occasion the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed conference room was also organized, which is named after the esteemed former-head of the department, Prof. G.S. Marwaha - Conference Room.

At the outset of the event Prof. Anshumali, HOD, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering and Coordinator, EIACP(PC-RP), IIT(ISM) Dhanbad delivered the inaugural address and emphasized on allocating 8% of Earth's surface to rivers and their tributaries to interlink landscapes. In his enlightening discussion Prof. Anshumali said that this allocation is vital for the continuous evolution of civilization and protecting biodiversity from mass extinction. Prof. Anshumali further added that the Government of India in 1952 committed to allocate 33 % geographical area for forests, the next immediate commitment must be 8 % land for rivers in National Water Policy setting a precedent that we hope other countries will follow. Prof. Anshumali concluded his discussion by saying that our collective resolve transcends mere words—it demands action. Let's work together to free rivers from plastic pollution.

During the event, we had the privilege of hosting Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Senior Advisor at GMDC, Gujarat, and former Professor & Head of the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering. As the invited keynote speaker, Prof. Singh delivered a talked about Prof. G.S. Marwaha, to whom the newly developed conference room is dedicated and shared his experiences which was followed by an insightful lecture on the evolution of the Department of ESE and its significant contributions to environmental sustainability. His expertise shed light on the department's journey and its pivotal role in shaping sustainable practices for a greener future.

Plastic pollution is a pressing global issue, causing environmental destruction, biodiversity loss, contributing to global warming and harbors immense potential to impact human health. As per report of UN about over 380 million tonnes of plastic are now produced every year globally while only 9 percent of plastic ever produced has been recycled. Thus, this Earth Day we celebrated with the commitment to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040. Participants pledged to take concrete steps, including reducing, reusing, and recycling plastics, while advocating for eco-friendly alternatives and responsible consumption. A total of 36 faculty members, staffs and research scholars actively engaged in the event, demonstrating a shared commitment towards fostering a sustainable future.

The EIACP Programme Centre at Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, IIT(ISM) has been at the forefront of raising awareness and promoting sustainability by addressing the environmental impact of single-use plastics under Mission LiFE. The centre through a series of well-organized awareness campaigns, has successfully engaged with communities, students, and stakeholders to highlight the detrimental effects of single-use plastics on our planet. During the event the centre showcased documentary videos and pictures of events and awareness programme on Reduce Single Use Plastics theme of Mission LiFE. These visuals served as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to prioritize our planet over plastics, echoing the sentiment that every day should be Earth Day. Together, let's work towards a future where our actions reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable living.
